Why do some people spell silver jewellery as silver jewelry or jewelery?
The spelling ‘jewelry’ with one ‘l’ and one less 'e' is used commonly in the United States of America and Australia, as well as other English-language commonwealth countries.
Jewelry and jewellery are both valid spellings depending on the country you are in.
The Oxford English Dictionary, the definitive guide within the UK, spells jewellery with two ‘l’s and two ‘e’s’.
Similarly definitive guides outside of the UK refer to jewelry with just one ‘l’ and one ‘e’.
To our knowledge the only other country to commonly use the UK spelling is South Africa.
We prefer to ignore this little difference and instead concentrate on the beauty of each item of jewelry or jewellery.
If you see the word 'jewelery' it is most likely a spelling mistake. We do not know of any such spelling variation.
