What should I look for when buying sterling silver jewellery?

Ensure there are no blemishes, scratches or imperfections on the jewellery.

Look at any clips and fasteners and test them a few times to ensure they work properly and will hold your jewellery securely. It is worth remembering that even if a lock works it may not be strong enough to serve its purpose - in reality a poorly working clip is as useless as no clip at all.

With silver chains ensure that the links do not kink - this is most easily done by placing the chain on a flat surface and examining it from a few angles.

Always look for stamped 925 hallmarks on silver jewellery. If 925 hallmarks are not present the jewellery may be imitation silver or silver of a far lower quality than 925.
